South Taylor Emergency Medical Services (STEMS) is a not-for-profit volunteer ambulance service that provides 911 Basic Life Support to more advanced Mobile Intensive Care Unit support services for south central Taylor County. STEMS is owned and operated by it’s members and is governed by an elected president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer each serving 24 month terms. We are members of and active participants in the Big Country Regional Advisory Council for regional trauma care improvement and the Texas trauma registry. Most of the medics who volunteer for STEMS are also members of the local volunteer fire departments who provide first responder services for us on EMS calls. This service also provides uncompensated mutual aid to other communities that request our service that lay outside our defined 911 response area. STEMS operates 2 identical Frazer Type III ambulances. STEMS 204, based in Tuscola, is a 2007 Chevy and STEMS 203, based in Buffalo Gap, is a 2008 Chevy. Each ambulance has generator powered patient compartments complete with their own heat pumps, 12V lighting, and Halogen scene lighting. The patient compartments are completely independant from the cab and do not require any power from the engine. Both units are stocked for Basic Life Support, but are MICU capable. "Volunteering for South Taylor EMS gives me the opportunity to assist in so many ways. First, I enjoy participating in the emergency medical service that serves where I live. Second, I love to support those volunteers in the organization who are here because they also want to serve. While I live on the far outside edge of the service area which precludes me from answering many calls, I find that I can help through providing educational opportunities to our members to help them keep up their certifications and help the service to continue to provide the highest quality healthcare possible." Like many of the fire departments in the area, STEMS has a serious need for additional volunteers. Our membership is down substantially and this is really taking a toll on our staff that respond to calls. We pride ourselves in giving exceptional pre-hospital care and want this to continue into the future. If you are currently a state certified EMT/Paramedic or are interested in entering the EMS field, please contact us for more information. Benefits provided to our members include:
